Department of Botany was first started in P.G Centre affiliated to Sri Venkateswara University in 2006 as self supported course.  With effect from the academic year 2010-11, Sri Venkateswara University PG Centre has been brought under the fold of Vikrama Simhapuri university,Nellore renamed as Vikrama Simhapuri PG Centre. Department of Botany was started with strong philosophy to provide quality education with balanced basic knowledge of modern plant science and applications to the students. 

 

Dr V.Sailaja,Assistant Professor of Zoology is serving as Head Incharge. Three Academic Consultants and one Guest Faculty are in the department. Our faculty members are actively involved in research activities in the areas such as stress physiology of plants, phytomedicine and conservation of  biodiversity . 

 

INFRASTRUCTURE:

 

The department has 2 class rooms,1 Office room cum Staff room and one Lab with total area  2476 sq.ft

 

CURRICULAR ASPECTS:

Course Structure:

  • 4 Semesters with 16 theory, 8 labs with 96 credits.

  • Courses offered with CBCS Pattern by the Department

 

Student Profile:

The Department has the total intake of 30 students per year.

Teaching and learning process:

  • Black board teaching along with teaching through LCD projectors.

  • Regular seminars conducted to improve student’s knowledge and communication skills.

  • Regular Students Counseling and Monitoring

  • Students are encouraged and trained to appear for GATE, CSIR-UGC-NET, SET and Other Competitive Examinations

  • Performance of students monitored through periodical tests, group discussions etc..

Extension activities:

Students are encouraged to 

  • participate in NSS activities

  • Participate  in Blood Donations camps

  • Participate in Sports and Games and cultural activities.

 

Future plan:

  • To raise the standards of teaching and strengthen the facilities to PG students.

  • To give special training to students for competitive examinations.

  • To establish plant Tissue culture Laboratory. 

  • To construct vermicompost pit for the proper maintenance of Botanical Garden 

  • To develop the herbarium museum 

  • To conduct the training programmes on Mush room cultivation 

  • To give  training to the  students for competitive examinations like NET/SET/GATE etc.,

 

Field Trips 

Field trips were conducted periodically in every academic year.

 

Prathibha Awards 

 

Students from the department of Botany won 04 Prathiba awards in 2013-15,05 awards in 2014-16, 05 awards in 2015-17 and 05 awards in 2016-18.    

 

Books in the Library 

 

600 Books and several Journals and periodicals were present in the Library 

 

Botanical Garden

 

Botanical garden with nearly 100 varieties of medicinal plants is our campus. In our Botanical garden we are maintaining the lotus pond with Nelumbo nucifera .
